Do I need to live in France to get married there?

No. If you don’t live in France and would just want to organize a fabulous destination wedding that will impress your friends and family, you can do so without the need for a civil ceremony.

A wedding party without a civil ceremony means that you will not be legally married in France. You would have simply organized your wedding party here. Most couples that take this approach would have already been legally married in their home country.

However, if you want to be legally married in France, you will need to apply to a local town hall to organize a civil ceremony. Town halls only accept applications for civil ceremonies from local residents. You or one of your parents would need to have lived in the local area for at least 40 days before the day of the ceremony.

Some of the documents that local town halls ask for organizing civil ceremonies include birth certificates, proof of residential address, certificate of celibacy etc.
